I've found in bath bombs that tea tree can smell kinda "medicine-y". But a sandalwood-vanilla bomb not only smells amazing wafting out of the bathroom, but it leaves an amazingly warm scent on men. Yum. :) Good luck, feel free to ping me with any questions!

Thanks for this recipe! My hubby LOVES bath bombs, but it's rare to find them with "manly" scents. Although he's reasonably partial to lavender and jasmine he worries it might make him smell too "girly" (boys can be so silly sometimes). He'd love something like tea tree or sandalwood. Going to give this recipe a go and see If he likes that ;)

Fantastic, can't wait to hear! I've made really monster size one's before...like the size of a softball. No worries on blowing up the tub. ;) Nobody ever lets me near anything that could actually explode. That's like giving the Mythbusters a cannonball. Chaos will ensue. Hee! Happy Holidays, I'm so glad you were able to make something groovy! Yay!

Just made these! I thought you were using the biggest fill-able plastic ornament at Hobby Lobby though, so mine have turned out with a diameter of about six inches... This could be scary. I already got a really good Christmas present for the friend I'm giving these to though, so if they end up exploding her tub, she'll think it was a prank!
I ended up using scented epsom salts (that's all I could find), and I ground up some Crayola tub tints in the mix so they'll turn the bath water bright colors. :)
I'll let you know how they turn out!

Lauren, if you mean epsom salts, then yes, that works well. If you mean stuff that has already been colored and perfumed, then you might not have great luck. Bath bombs are so finicky. :)

I'm definitely making these for Christmas! And quite a few for myself.
One question though:
Are "Bath Mineral Salts" the right kind of salt? Bath salts I can find everywhere!
Thanks so much!

It's fantastic that scientific tests are taking place to provide good insight into the already established and age old benefits of natural rememdies. They provide great insight into the compositions and add to understanding.

Such a shame though, that they still think it is OK to test on innocent creatures and make them suffer. There are other ways to run these tests....come on great scientists, get a heart!

Susan, I find that, within reason, crystal size of the salts doesn't matter too much. I like to use dead sea salts, and I run them through a grinder until they're about the same size/consistency as kosher salt. I've not had great luck with grains as small as table salt, but bath fizzies are so temperamental that they react differently for everyone, depending on humidity and all sorts of variables.

Just have fun! And share pics! :)

This looks like a great recipe and I can't wait to try it! Question though - should the salts be fine or coarse? Or doesn't it matter? This is a great project for my daughter and I to make for Christmas gifts. Thanks for sharing!!

I have done saponified soap (traditional, old fashioned lye soap) in molds made with this material, so it will work...but for a good geode, you'll want to use glycerin to get the colors right. Each one of those soaps can take an hour or more to make...it's not an easy process if you want it to actually look like a geode. If you're not quite as picky about realism, however, it's a pretty fast pour.

I make my own glycerin soap, so I can't speak to the quality of what you might be using. There's a huge variation in the market as to quality. Most of them that aren't made by organic manufacturers are just detergent that you can melt and pour. It's pretty awful stuff, both for the skin and for the handmade market. There are some good vendors out there, and were I you, I'd avoid the stuff at craft stores, and go with a vendor that sells to the trade. Brambleberry has a fantastic product, and sells in small amounts. (I sell glycerin, but only in massive blocks.) Keep in mind that glycerin is a humectant. A humectant is a hygroscopic substance. It is a molecule with several hydrophilic groups which absorb water from the air. On humid days, glycerin will sweat, it's just what it does.

As to color, for a small batch, I wouldn't invest in expensive professional colorants. Food coloring will work fine in glycerin. You just want a couple of drops per bar. Don't use too much, or you'll turn your clients a different color. It seems to upset some people when they turn green or purple. Some people...what can you do? ;)

Good luck! Ping me if you run into trouble!

Hi - I am interested in making the geode molds. How did this mold handle hot temperatures of the soap? Also, what did you color the amethyst with and especially, how did you create the layered looks? Do you recommend glycerin soap? I have someone who wants a massage geode soap made to look like amethyst. I have never colored soap or made a mold...I've just been using glycerin and heart shaped tins. I also find it sweats a lot.
Thanks!

Ah, Oz is gonna be like the UK as far as naming protocol goes. Corn flour should work in your local. Try it, and then ping me back, so I can add that bit of knowledge to the database about world ingredients. :)

Oh man, I hate when that happens! It's cause the mixture got too wet, or the humidity was too high, or the chaos gods were laughing at you...there's no telling what will set off the chemical reaction, but 9 times out of 10 it's because the mix is too wet for some reason. However, don't get discouraged, these are tricky beasts, and even after making thousands of them, sometimes my batches will just go off, puff up and refuse to cooperate. :) Ah science, she's a tricky mistress. ;)

Corn starch should be in any baking section of the grocery store. It's a super common ingredient (and really inexpensive). It the UK, cornflour *is* corn starch, but in the US, corn flour is corn meal...and I'm not sure which you've got. Flour doesn't work, it gets gummy...and tapioca gets kinda slimy. Best bet, look on the top shelf of the store above the flour, and there should be a small container of corn starch. Lemme know if you can't find any, and I'll see if we can't find you a local vendor. :)

Hi
I also love your site (and your sense of humour!) I am about to start making my first batch of bath bombs (wish me luck)
I was wondering if you can substitute corn starch? I cant find it ANYWHERE! :( or could you tell me where to get some? I have corn flour and tapioca starch. Do you think these will work?
Your advice is appreciated
thanks :)

I agree, but given the current political climate, I don't hold out much hope for common sense in any given direction. Sigh.

I have been researching US vs EU's actions on cosmetic regulation for a while now, and was definitely rooting for tighter FDA regulations comparable with the EU's. However, unless the literature is changed, the regulations delineated in the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 will indefinitely hurt small and infant businesses who are likely already over-complying with FDA regulations BUT there still exists a prodigious need for regulation of the larger cosmetic industries. No one can deny this, otherwise the bill would not have made it on the agenda in the first place. There hasn't been any strong legislation re. cosmetics since the 1960 color additive act (a weak one at that). Furthermore, I seriously doubt that the larger industries are lobbying for this bill to sweep the legs out from under their artisan competition--they are still making PLENTY of profit. We all want safer consumer products. The bill is a step in the right direction, it just needs serious modification.

Congress should amend the act to stipulate that only businesses grossing over $X,XXX,XXX annually should be subjected to such fastidious regulation because their companies could actually pay for the countless lab tests, unlike small businesses. If the FDA really wishes all businesses to comply with the new standards, they should provide artisans the means to do so by funding specific new laboratories or establishing collaboration between small businesses and prestigious and highly funded research such as the American Cancer Society, etc...
